Craig The Moffat County Tourism Association is scheduled to host a special meeting today to sort through a pool of 28 applicants for its vacant director position.
The meeting originally was set for Thursday but was rescheduled.
MCTA board members hope to have the applications carved down to three finalists after the meeting.
They will interview the finalists at a later date.
The director position is charged with the development of tourism within Moffat County through advertising, sponsorships and working with the media, MCTA board chairwoman Annie MacGregor said.
“The most important thing we look for in a director is the ability to work within the public and create a flow of communication with all of our partners,” she said.
The MCTA board is made up of seven members and one alternate. The board listed the job for less than two months and has applicants from all across the state and nation.
One application came from within the association.
The MCTA board filed a personnel requisition form Dec. 8, 2009, with the Moffat County Commission and started advertising the position the day after. The position closed to applicants Jan. 31.
The position was last held by Michelle Balleck, current Craig Daily Press online content producer, who resigned in November 2009.
MCTA was established in 1989 and receives funding from the county’s 1.9 percent lodging tax.
MacGregor said tourism is an essential component to the county’s success.
“Tourism in Moffat County boils down to economic development,” she said. “Tourists bring back money to help the local economy, and that helps the community.”
MCTA has been planning its next marketing campaign after debuting the slogan “rugged landscapes, rugged adventure, rugged Moffat County,” in the fourth quarter of 2009, MacGregor said.
MCTA has a marketing committee meeting next week and will be “narrowing down what our marketing plan and focus will be,” MacGregor said.
“We want to have a clear vision of 2010 and beyond,” she said.
Today’s MCTA special meeting is open to the public and will take place at 4 p.m. in the conference room at the Craig Chamber of Commerce, 360 E. Victory Way.
