Craig As the season winds down, the Moffat County High School boys varsity wrestling team is setting itself up nicely for not just the regional meet, but the state meet as well, coach Roman Gutierrez said.
The team is coming off a successful weekend in Meeker, in which seven wrestlers won duals, while only one fell.
Most importantly, however, has been the recovery of some of the team’s top talents.
Nathan Tomlin, who had suffered a forearm injury, came back after missing several weeks to win his dual.
Cody Nelson (finger) has moved a step closer to coming back, and Garrett Stewart (elbow) has also been on the mend.
The team will travel Friday to Rifle, which will allow some of the banged-up Bulldogs to condition one week before the regional tournament in Lakewood.
Originally, the Friday and Saturday duals were going to be the all-league duals, but after two teams dropped out, it will be a dual meet only.
But, the Bulldogs will be able to use their five duals to prepare mentally and physically for the Feb. 12 and 13 regional meet, Gutierrez said.
“We’re just trying to keep guys healthy, and not have any more injuries,” he said.
Moffat County will face league-foes Palisade, Delta, Battle Mountain, Eagle Valley and Rifle on Friday.
“Hopefully, we’ll get five duals in this week,” Gutierrez said. “That will help them get into wrestling-type shape.”
The team has been on a reduced practice schedule as it prepares for the regional tournament.
“Want to get them where they peak right at the week of state,” Gutierrez said. “Right now, it’s not as intense. We’ll build the intensity over the weekend.”
