New officers assigned to ACET
Craig Police Department, Moffat County Sheriff’s Office designate members to drug task force

Two new officers have been assigned to the All Crimes Enforcement Team drug task force. Craig Police Chief Walt Vanatta appointed sergeant Marvin Cameron, a 14-year veteran, and Sheriff Tim Jantz appointed former Dinosaur deputy Bhrent Shock to ACET.

Sheriff’s Office deputy saves baby

Staffers at the Moffat County Courthouse called a Moffat County Sheriff’s Office deputy a hero for his efforts Tuesday in saving a young child who was choking. Poley, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office off and on since March 2007, said the incident was just a part of his duties as a courthouse security guard.

Girls varsity swim team moves closer to state

With only one race remaining until the Feb. 12 state swim meet, the Moffat County High School girls varsity swim team is trying to add to its state-bound roster. The team will try to cut down on its times when it swims Friday at the League Championships in Grand Junction.

Eryn Leonard, a freshman, will represent Moffat County High School this weekend at the all-league swimming meet in Grand Junction and Feb. 12 at the state meet in Loveland. She swims the 100-meter butterfly.
Part of Cedar Mountain Road closed to protect raptors

The upper portion of Cedar Mountain Road northwest of Craig will be closed to motorized vehicles from Feb. 3 through late spring or early summer to protect nesting raptors, the Bureau of Land Management reported in a news release.
Moffat County School District to bid out insurance contract

With nearly 10 percent less state funding, the Moffat County School District is busy planning for upcoming budget cuts amounting to more than $1 million. On the expense side, rising insurance premiums could cost the district more than $500,000 more to provide benefits to its staff next year, district finance director Mark Rydberg said.
Moffat County census forms to be hand delivered

Moffat County will be one of the few counties nationwide that will have census forms hand delivered, census spokeswoman Deborah Cameron said. Unlike roughly 95 percent of the country, the Census Bureau deemed Northwest Colorado to be “not advantageous for mailing,” said Chris Anthony, a Craig resident and local census recruiting assistant.
Moffat County High School sends record number to All State Choir

On the west wall of the Moffat County High School choir room, next to a Colorado state flag, a series of plaques commemorate a significant achievement for several students in the school’s history. Each year, the names of students who are selected for the All State Choir are engraved on a plaque and hung on the wall. Soon, five MCHS students will see their names displayed next to decades of singers who achieved the same milestone.
Swinging bridge anchors to get soil test

The Moffat County Com­mission is moving forward with preliminary plans to rebuild the Browns Park swinging bridge on Moffat County Road 83. On Tuesday, the commission approved a $2,200 contract with Soilogic Inc. to perform soil and rock tests near the bridge’s anchors.

The All Crimes Enforcement Team drug task force has added new officers and implemented new provisions after an audit from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Craig Police Department Chief Walt Vanatta requested the audit in the wake of two charges of officer misconduct in the past year.

A steady stream of police officers and emergency responders filed up to the witness box Tuesday during the first day of the trial of Eduardo and David Capote. The Miami brothers are charged with assault in connection with a Jan. 2, 2009, altercation at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Seventh Street that led to the death of Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez.

My husband’s brother has a 10-year-old son. He’s an only child and still sleeps with his parents. He has a perfectly nice bedroom, but they never got around to making him sleep by himself.
