CDPHE advises on vaccinations

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is recommending that adults who have contact with infants, or are a member of a household with an infant, get vaccinated against pertussis (whooping cough) with Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis).

Colorado is among several states that have seen a notable increase in the number of pertussis cases reported this year, according to a news release from the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association.

“By vaccinating health care workers, parents of newborns and family members, or others who have close contact with infants and young children, we better protect infants and young children,” the VNA stated in the release.

Pertussis can cause severe illness, especially in young infants, and in rare cases can be fatal. Babies cannot begin the first of the three recommended pertussis infant vaccinations until they are at least 6 weeks old.

Anyone interested is encouraged to contact your pharmacy, health care provider’s office or local public health agency for vaccinations.

The VNA offers the Tdap vaccination in Craig at all drop-in flu clinics or by appointment. For more information, call 824-8233 in Craig.
