The shoes toeing the line, the swish of the net and the look on children’s faces when they sink a basket.

These are just some of the reasons that Frank Sadvar looks forward to early December.

As part of a nationwide program, Elks Lodge No. 1577 will host its annual Free Throw Hoop Shoot Contest at 8 a.m. Saturday at Sandrock Elementary School, 201 E. Ninth St. The contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13 with an interest in basketball.

One of the best parts about the event is that it’s completely free, Elks Lodge Secretary Sadvar said.

“It’s one of our big projects of the year,” Sadvar said. “”We just want to get the kids down there and doing something.”

The hoop shoot participants will each toss 25 free throws, with the most accurate shooters going on to the district competition.

The following competition levels include state, regional and national.

The event is one of the main community activities for which the Elks raise money throughout the year, Sadvar said. The money goes to providing travel fees for the winners as they progress.

Sadvar said he is hoping for a good turnout compared to last year’s competition.

“Last year, we only had 24 kids. It wasn’t a very good year,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for about 10 years and I’ve seen as many as 130 kids in one year. I’d love to see that again, but we need to get the word out.”

Sadvar said the competition is open to children beyond Craig. Kids from Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Maybell and surrounding towns are welcome to participate, too.

“The closest Elks Lodges we have are in Rifle and Rangely, so Steamboat and Hayden don’t have their own,” he said. “I hope their kids show up. The more the merrier.”
