— Joe DeAngelo, the former investigator for the 14th Judicial District, has declined Routt County Sheriff-elect Garrett Wiggins’ offer to be undersheriff.

“The decision was the most difficult in my 22-year law enforcement career,” DeAngelo said in an e-mail. “Mr. Wiggins is the most honorable man I have ever met, and the citizens of Routt County are very fortunate to have such a fine man serve as their sheriff.”

DeAngelo recently took an investigator job for the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, a position he has called a “dream job.”

On Wednesday evening, Wiggins said he had several other qualified applicants to choose from. He said he expected to make his next choice for undersheriff in a week.
