- Fundraiser in Baggs, Wyo., nets $1,700 for injured deputy

- An unusual scene unfolded Saturday night at Fireside Family Restaurant in Baggs, Wyo. Seven uniformed sheriffs, men more accustomed to writing traffic tickets and serving justice, were instead writing meal tickets and serving food. The occasion was “Tip-a-Cop,” a fundraiser for deputy Kyle Rosentreter, of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office. At $15 per plate, the event raised an estimated $1,700 in three hours.

- Upon arriving Saturday afternoon at the scene of a cabin fire in Wilderness Ranch, firefighters found a structure fully-involved in flames with little chance of being saved. However, the nearly 50-person crew from several responding agencies was able to contain the blaze to the cabin, and keep it from spreading to the surrounding forest. Given the close proximity of trees and the ease in which the fire could have spread to them, containing the fire to the cabin can’t be downplayed, Craig Fire/Rescue Chief Bill Johnston said.

- “I think it was 1996 when I opened this place, but I can’t remember for sure. I know it’s been more than 10 years. My whole family has always been in the food industry. My husband, Mike, worked in restaurants, and before he was cooking, he was a waiter and it just seems like we’ve always been involved in that industry. It’s been a natural progression to me opening the shop. And after I started it, he joined me once he retired.

- Natasha Sloan doesn’t need more than a handful of seconds to think of why shooting sports are her favorite. The 15-year-old 4-H sharpshooter said she is happiest when she is staring down a target through the sights on her .22 rifle. “Shooting is my whole life, pretty much,” she said. “I hunt, and it’s just my favorite sport.” On Aug. 21, her sport gave back to her and her team.
- 2 Craig area cooks win awards alongside national BBQ talent

- After days of cooking, winners of the first Colorado State BBQ Championship were announced Saturday afternoon at the Wyman Museum in Craig. Among the winners were two local teams: Smokin’ 101 of Meeker and Adrian Nelson of Craig. Smokin’ 101 won two awards — sixth place in the pork category and 10th place for brisket. Nelson, who works in the parts department at Tri-State Generation & Transmission, was awarded $100 for his fourth-place finish in the chicken category.

This all started with the news that General Motors was going to offer its stock to the public for an undisclosed amount per share. The company hadn’t really thought about when they were going to make this offer, but the sound bite alone that they were going to, made the TV stock market “analysts” so happy the population of the planet Stupid rose by 80 percent.
