The Bulldogs were unable to mount a late comeback and fell, 26-22, on Friday night to the Evergreen Cougars. MCHS threatened late in the game, but with 30 seconds to go, Evergreen intercepted a pass to seal the win.
MCHS begins the 2010 season 0-1.
For the first time in the game, MCHS now trails Evergreen. With 9:55 remaining, the Cougars' Sean O'Donnell scored a touchdown from one yard out to put Evergreen ahead, 26-22. The Cougars' two-point conversion failed.
With 5:42 remaining in the third quarter, Evergreen's Kevin Cassell reeled in a 26-yard touchdown catch to pull the Cougars closer to the Bulldogs. The two-point conversion failed, and MCHS leads, 22-20.
Bulldog Mason Updike rumbled forward two yards for a touchdown with 10:45 left in the third quarter. The after point is good, and the Bulldogs take a 22-14 lead over the Cougars.
MCHS leads Evergreen, 15-14, at halftime. The Cougars attempted a field goal with 16 seconds left in the second quarter to give them the lead. But, Bulldogs' linebacker Steven Wagner was able to block the attempt to keep MCHS on top.
With 1:20 remaining in the second quarter, Evergreen has scored to cut the MCHS lead to 15-14 in favor of the Bulldogs. Quarterback Noah Ansley ran four yards to score the touchdown for the Cougars.
Evergreen strikes early in the second as Kevin Cassell catches a 48-yard pass for a touchdown. Kick after is good. MCHS now leads, 15-7.
The Bulldogs strike again. Ivers finds Conner for a touchdown. The point after kick is no good. MCHS leads, 15-0, with 23 seconds left in the first.
CJ Walt's defense has again benefitted the Bulldogs. The MCHS linebacker tackles the Evergreen punter in the end zone for a safety and two points. MCHS now leads, 9-0, with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter.
MCHS gets on the scoreboard first with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Bubba Ivers connects with senior Brady Conner on a 22-yard touchdown run following a CJ Walt fumble recovery. Walt's point after kick is good, and the Bulldogs lead, 7-0, over Evergreen.
The Moffat County High School Bulldogs begin a new season at 7 p.m. today when they play out-of-league opponent Evergreen High School at MCHS, 900 Finley Lane.
MCHS, which doesn’t begin school until Monday, is among the first teams in the state to open their season early.
The Bulldogs went 6-4 overall in 2009, and 4-4 in the Western Slope League.
They did not have a shared opponent with the Cougars, which finished 2009 with a 3-7 overall record and 2-6 in the Metro League.
