Students were busy gathering last-minute school supplies and enjoying the sunshine before heading back to school. - In a first for the Moffat County High School boys varsity football program, the team will play a zero week game at 7 p.m. Friday at MCHS against Evergreen High School. Every year, a handful of teams play a game before the first day of school, and this year, it’s the Bulldogs who are matched up against the Cougars a team in the Metro South League.

- One-sixth of the American economy. That’s the amount health care expert Kelly Victory said will be controlled by the federal government if health care reform continues where it’s headed. Victory, a Steamboat Springs resident, spoke Wednesday night at the Bears Ears Patriots monthly meeting at American Legion Post 62.

- Don Riley got a phone call a few weeks ago, and it was one he was happy to receive. The call was from a former protégé, requesting that he return temporarily to the education career he ended seven years ago. Not long after, he agreed to step back into the role of school administrator.

- The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association honored its longest-tenured employees Wednesday in a ceremony following the VNA’s annual meeting at The Haven in Hayden. Registered Nurse Ann Irvin, the VNA’s nurse-family partnership supervisor, was among 12 employees recognized at the event. This month marks a significant milestone in the career of Irvin, who works from the Craig office. “This is really extraordinary,” VNA Chief Executive Officer Sue Birch said to the crowd at Wednesday’s meeting. “For the first time ever (at the VNA), we have a 25-year employee.”
- Meeker hunting outfitter charged with baiting game

- A Meeker hunting outfitter was indicted Tuesday on charges of conspiracy and violating the federal Lacey Act, which prohibits the trade or sale of illegally hunted and killed wildlife across state lines. Dennis Rodebaugh, 69, owner of D&S Guide and Outfitter, and Brian Kunz, 54, of Augusta, Wis., a hunting guide, were both charged with conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and nine counts of interstate sale of unlawfully taken big game, all felonies, according to court records.

- To the editor: There is a serious problem with a group of Colorado Republican legislators who traveled this month to Arizona to meet with that state’s governor and legislative leaders. They billed the trip as an opportunity to “refine (their) understanding and fortify our resolve.” This trip signals that the Colorado GOP in the statehouse wants to craft a policy similar to the controversial Arizona law. Whether or not you agree with the Arizona bill, it is simply not right for Colorado, and these legislators that went to Arizona used the bill for a political photo-op.

- I have an idea for a reality TV sensation: Family Reunion Frenzy. This summer, my family gathered in Wyoming, and Joel’s a week later in Illinois. I needed more recovery time: my eyes had barely begun to refocus when we departed for the Sheridan festivities. I have six siblings, and Joel has seven.

- Richard Wildenhaus, Moffat County High School athletic director, is warning the community about a company soliciting local businesses, possibly fraudulently. An advertising company called Victory Sports is soliciting local businesses, Wildenhaus said. The company is not affiliated with MCHS, he added.

- Rep. Randy Baumgardner recently spent about six days in Arizona with 10 other Republican state legislators. The Republican from Hot Sulphur Springs said “there’s a very good possibility there will be legislation drafted” regarding immigration laws in Colorado’s 2011 legislative session.
