Andy Bockelman: “Eat Pray Love” heartburn at best, heartbreak at worst
August 20, 2010
Sometimes you need to travel the world to truly learn who you are and what you’re capable of doing in life, taking in all the cultures, cuisine and companionship you can. And, sometimes you may as well save a year and a lot of money in airfare by just stretching on a yoga mat for a half-hour, heating up a can of Chef Boyardee, turning on the TV and snuggling with your cat. Such is the lesson to be learned in “Eat Pray Love.”

Folks: Judging me without knowing me
August 20, 2010
There seems to be a lot of judging going on about our community about others without first really getting to know them. Why are we so quick to cast the first stone? The historical Jesus waarns us about doing so, “Do not judge others with a splinter in their eye when we have a log in ours.” The ethos of a people is defined as “the tone, character, and quality of their life, it’s moral and aesthetic style and mood, the picture we have of the way things in sheer actuality are, our most comprehensive ideas of order” (Geertz, The Interpretation of Cultures).

Don’t let them get away with such behavior.
Annie’s Mailbox: Parents think son only wants their money
August 20, 2010
Dear Annie: Our 19-year-old son, “Todd,” left home a year ago with only a backpack. He left a voicemail saying he was with a friend and not to look for him. My husband finally got a mailing address when he called Todd’s cell phone and said perhaps insurance coverage was no longer needed if we didn’t know where he was. We continued to forward mail to him and twice received e-mail — once to ask for money (which we sent) and another time to tell us his guitar had been stolen
