If the Moffat County High School boys varsity baseball team wanted to send a message to the other top teams in the Western Slope League, consider it sent.

Playing a doubleheader against first-place Palisade High School on Friday at Craig Middle School, the MCHS varsity team split the two games.

In the first game, freshman Mark Doolin struck out five batters in three innings to pick up the win.

“Palisade beat Delta, which is one of the top three teams in our league,” Doolin said. “I think tonight we wanted to prove that we are as good as they are, and I think we did.”

Nathan Hill started the first game for MCHS (5-3 overall, 3-2 in the Western Slope League) and Doolin came in on relief to pick up a 12-10 win.

“I felt pretty good,” Doolin said. “I was keeping the ball low, and even though they hit some balls hard, I was able to keep it on the ground.”

In the first game, Hill and Ben Williams each scored a pair of runs, Halen Raymond went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Austin Sadvar went 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs.

The team did exactly what manager Justin Folley wanted it to do with the bat, he said.

“All week, we worked on hitting the ball to the opposite field,” he said. “The guys stayed back and hit it to right field.

“It worked because we put up 12 runs.”

Against a potent Palisade lineup, Moffat County was able to strive in high-pressure situations, Folley said.

“I thought Nathan pitched well, but he was hurt when he left the ball up,” he said. “Then, to have a freshman put in a spot like that, I thought Doolin did a great job.”

But it wasn’t just Doolin’s arm that impressed his manager.

“He came in and had a good at-bat,” Folley said.

In the second game, the Bulldogs exploded for five runs in the second inning behind two RBIs by Bubba Ivers.

But unfortunately for MCHS, the team wouldn’t score again against Palisade’s ace, Mike Seriani, who was the winner in the 7-5 victory.

“I thought Ben Williams threw well again,” Folley said. “He got hurt on some balls he left up, but he definitely pitched well enough to win.”

One area that improved in both games for the Bulldogs was the defense, Folley said.

“They did a much better job today,” he said. “They definitely stepped it up today.”

Raymond, who normally mans third and first base, played left field in the second game for MCHS and made a diving play in the third to rob a hit from Palisade’s Gabe Hellmann.

Moffat County held a 5-1 lead at one point, but Palisade was able to chip away until the game was tied in the fourth inning.

Palisade (10-3 overall, 7-2 in the WSL) would score two runs in the bottom of the six to go ahead, 7-5.
