Relationships between three Moffat County community organizations have grown considerably in the past year, representatives said.
The recently launched joint Web site for the Craig Chamber of Commerce, Moffat County Tourism Association and Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership has played a part in mending fences, but the biggest impact has come from the people involved.
"There were times when maybe the executive directors and the board members, there was kind of some turf protection, but that doesn't happen now," EDP board president Scott Cook said. "We all do different things, but we're all sort of out to help Craig."
Their working relationship is more than public relations, he added.
"At one point, there were a lot of people in Craig that thought one organization could do the work of all three organizations," Cook said. "Now, they're kind of like fingers on a hand. It's tough to do one thing without the cooperation of the" other groups.
Although the three groups couldn't agree to plan for remodeling the Moffat County Visitor Center this summer, Cook said he looked at that episode as a sign of how strong the working relationship is.
"To me, I thought it was a good sign that we could come together and decide it might not help," Cook said. "In the past, I think some of the organizations have been so tunnel visioned on things that said, 'I don't care if it doesn't help this organization, it's going to help my organization.'"
Chamber and MCTA officials said they thought so-called friction between their groups has been overstated because of the public dispute regarding Visitor Center funding in late 2007.
At the time, the Chamber board said they might have to close the Visitor Center unless MCTA contributed more funding.
"The Chamber and MCTA had some tense discussions about the Visitor Center and how it was being funded," Chamber Executive Director Christina Currie said.
Although the new Web site is one example of how the Chamber and MCTA work together, collaboration always has been a goal, she added.
Patt McCaffrey, MCTA board vice chair, said memories of the Visitor Center dispute are long gone.
"I think everyone decided that we were going to find ways to work together better, and that's what we've done," she said. "Everyone is working hard to be open-minded and put egos aside."
The various Web sites will continue to be a focus for the different organizations as they bring new features online.
On the Chamber site, for instance, the group has launched a hunting forum where residents, outfitters, businesses and hunters can share comments, ideas and tips.
In the future, it also plans to establish a business-to-business forum for companies to share anything from tax information to comments on proposed local, state and national legislation.
