MCHS to celebrate Veterans Day

October 26, 2009

On Nov. 14, Moffat County High School is going to try something new and different to celebrate Veterans Day.

The social studies department is in the process of organizing a celebration that will include remembering, honoring and learning about local veterans.

Organizers hope to integrate the holiday into history and government courses.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 will perform a 21-gun salute on the football field in the morning.

Teacher Jeff Simon said he hopes to organize a flyover that will be synchronized with the salute, as well.

Teacher Joy Tegtman is extending an invitation to local war veterans and those who now serve in the armed forces to participate in the event.

Tegtman is organizing two slideshows and looking to the community to supply photos of local veterans or those who still serve in the armed forces.

"Although we are still trying to finish the plans, we want to start collecting photos," Tegtman said. "All we ask is that the photos identify the military person and when he or she served and have a return address."

She said photos can be e-mailed to eric.hansen@moffatsd.org, dropped of at the high school or mailed to 900 Finley Lane by Nov. 6.

She also said she hopes local veterans can join the celebration by attending the VFW ceremony, slideshows and scheduled guest speakers.

Anyone interested should call Tegtman at the high school at 826-6593 so seating arrangements can be made before the event.
