Mary Morris: Thanks to Kathie
October 26, 2009
To the editor:
Last year, my daughter's beloved companion, Tonka, a beautiful Chesapeake Bay retriever, escaped from our yard and was hit by a semitruck on the highway.
Unaware that Tonka had been killed, I called law enforcement and the animal hospital to report her missing and then continued searching for her.
Unable to find her, I then went to work. Animal Control Officer Kathie Johnson came to my office to break the news to me that our dog had died earlier that morning.
She comforted me when I broke down, and helped me pick up Tonka.
Kathy was so very kind and went above and beyond what could be expected of an animal control officer in this situation. She gave me her business card and told me to call her if I needed anything.
I took her card. The card has been sitting on my desk for months.
I intended to call Kathie to thank her for all she did. I intended to send her something to show my appreciation.
I wish I would have because now I can only share with others how wonderful she was to our family. Craig has lost yet another valued community member.
