To the editor:

Your recent story about the Grand Junction Salvation Army Service Unit (11/16/09) being flooded with applicants to ring collection bells for minimal pay this holiday season emphasizes the need many people have for help as the current national depression floods into Western Colorado.

The Craig Service Extension Unit of the Salvation Army depends on the generosity of community members to help meet the needs of Moffat County residents.

Already this year we have helped nearly 90 people, half of them children. The requests have exceeded those of last year significantly.

We rely totally on volunteers to ring the familiar bells during our annual fundraising drive. Most of the money collected in Moffat County stays in Moffat County.

The kettles will be out in Craig beginning Nov. 27, and we are still in need of volunteers to keep them ringing each weekend until Christmas Eve. There are many open times available for any individual or group.

Just as every penny dropped into the kettles counts, every hour given in service to man the bells helps neighbors who are struggling during these tough financial times.
