The Craig Chamber of Commerce and the Craig Police Department are warning local businesses of a scam involving map sales related to the Chamber, according to a news release.
The Chamber has produced a local map through a company, “Village Profile,” police reported.
However, another company is calling advertisers and implying that it represents the Chamber; the company also requests advertisers renew their ads at a discounted price.
The company, Hometown Productions, also known as Universal Adcom, of Peoria, Ill., with offices in Arlington and Fort Worth, Texas, has “apparently obtained the authorized map being used by the Chamber and (is) using it to contact businesses in Craig,” police reported.
“This company is well known to the Better Business Bureau due to complaints from around the country and has faced lawsuits for defrauding different groups, claiming that they will provide portions of the money they raise to benefit chambers, school districts and other entities,” police reported in the release.
Businesses are warned that, should they receive a call in reference to advertising in the Chamber map, to “thoroughly question the caller and advise them that you will verify this information by calling the Craig Chamber of Commerce,” police officials said.
Police officials also warn against giving personal information to the caller, “even if they say they are only verifying the phone number and business name.”
