Colorado Secretary of State Bernie Buescher plans to make his first official visit to Moffat County on Tuesday.
Buescher will appear at 10 a.m. at Hamilton Community Hall in Hamilton for a special presentation commemorating the building’s reopening as an annual vote center.
Lila Herod, chief deputy clerk and recorder, applied for roughly $19,000 in grant funds this summer to remodel the Community Hall and bring it up
to modern handicap standards.
The building had been deemed ineligible for a county vote center because it did not meet government access standards.
The grant money was used to remodel the facility, such as adding a new ramp on the building’s north side to replace the existing ramp, which is too steep to meet requirements established by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Crews also built a new entrance on the building’s south side, replaced the front door on the west side that faces Colorado Highway 13 and leveled out the main entrance threshold, which also was too steep.
Herod has said previously that almost all the 125 registered voters in Hamilton were upset about the building’s closure.
She added last week that she was happy the county could work with other government agencies to make sure those residents have a convenient place to vote, which hopefully will increase voter participation in coming elections.
