Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 and the American Legion will be outside of several major shopping outlets the next few weekends handing out buddy poppies.
The groups use the donations received to sponsor needy assistance and other relief projects during the year. This year, a large portion of the receipts are designated for the Honor Flight program out of Grand Junction to get local/regional World War II veterans back to their World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., in August.
Please support this cause generously.
Honor Flight leaves Aug. 25 for D.C.
The Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., for World War II veterans is now on schedule.
A plane has been secured and the trip leaves Aug. 25 from Grand Junction. The groups coordinating the flight and assistance for the World War vets are still looking for and recruiting guardians to assist these older veterans in their travel.
The guardian has to pay his or her own way and that cost is approximately $1,000. If interested, please contact me. Efforts to raise the funds required to offset the free trip for these "heroes" is currently underway. As of this week, they were still short $70,000 to cover all the costs involved to transport, house and feed these vets during their round-trip venture.
Once the vet reaches the transport point of Walker Field in Grand Junction, there is no cost to them until they return to Grand Junction to go home.
Property tax exemptions for 100 percent disabled veterans
Pending state legislation indicates that the Ref E 100 percent property tax exemption for disabled veterans probably will stay intact, even though the exemption for senior citizens will drop for a period. If you draw this benefit, make sure you thank your state reps for continuing this program for our more seriously disabled veterans.
Thanks for Hometown Heroes
The annual picnic was a success even though turnout was small compared to previous years.
Thanks to the Craig Daily Press and its staff for sponsoring this event and to those who participated in the speeches and tribute to those whom are serving our country on foreign soil right now.
The community needs to support this event every Armed Forces Day.
Memorial Day services
A Memorial Day service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at the Craig Cemetery on Ashley Road. A service also will take place at 3 p.m. at the cemetery in Maybell.
We will be placing flags on veteran graves starting at about 5 p.m. Sunday at the Craig Cemetery. We will pick up all flags at about 6:30 p.m. Monday so that they are retired before sunset. VFW and American Legion post members would appreciate anyone who wishes to assist with this project to meet us at the cemetery during those times.
Grand Olde West Days parade
The Grand Olde West Days parade is at 2 p.m. Saturday. All local veterans are urged to attend and ride the float.
