Well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. (Some of you may want to put the paper down until this part is over.)

Last week's "Hunt for Fish and Game" resulted in a very informative letter (excuse me, e-mail) from a real live Colorado Division of Wildlife officer.

Please hold your wahoos.

Randy Hampton is from Grand Junction and relayed to me the funding, or lack of, that keeps us from having our own office in Craig.

I kind-a-sorta can handle the funding answer to having an office. But, what about a local cell phone number for questions or poaching reports?

In the meantime, use sportsman's information specialist Terry Carwile at 824-5689 as much as you need to because the DOW is paying a goodly portion of his wages.

But wait, there's more.

It seems a DOW commissioner - yes, you've read correctly, a wildlife commissioner - made several phone calls, one of which was to Daily Press Editor Joshua Roberts, trying to get a hold of me.

(I wonder if that made Josh smile or grimace.)

Wildlife Commissioner Roy McAnally e-mailed me about my hunt for the fish and game.

To help ease my pain, Mr. McAnally is going to send me the weekly statewide fishing report.

It probably won't be the same insightful tidbits mine will be, but we'll use what we can. After all, I don't have to worry about funding shortfalls. Not yet, any way.

Last week, I also mentioned my early columns being in the Museum of Northwest Colorado, which brought up a handful of questions from the curious few.

In 1972 or 1973, Robert Sweeney, the Craig Daily Press publisher and editor, gave an outspoken 23-year-old his own column and the occasional shot at other stuff, all for the unheard sum of 25 cents an inch.

During my on-again, off-again affair with journalism, money has never been part of the lust.

I'm also the same Mr. Glanville who hid his ponytail inside the collar of his shirt during school hours. Yes, Mrs. Jacobson, I was a teacher. Wore clean white shirts with a Windsor-knotted tie.

Makes you take an extra breath, doesn't it?

Now for something different :

This week, the fishing at Loudy-Simpson Park has slowed down for trout but picked up for pike.

That's good news for the pike heads.

Elkhead Reservoir hasn't turned yet, so the fishing remains slow. The Yampa River is running high, fast and nasty. The hot spot this week should be Stagecoach.

I know driving through Steamboat Springs is a "trip" all on its own, but Stagecoach is the spot.

Yup, there I was, surrounded by all the friends I'd left on shore when I said to myself, "Self," I said, cuz that's what I call myself when I'm talking to myself, "if we wish to be called Craig America, and if we're proud to live here, then renaming the school after Bill Adams is not worth discussing. It should be a given."

It's time to stand up, Craig. This is a point of honor. There, but for the grit of major Bill Adams, go you.
