They are the gift shop attendants and reception desk attendants. For the past 40 years, they have done all the little odd jobs.

They are the ladies in pink.

On Monday night, the Ladies Auxiliary was recognized during an appreciation dinner at the Holiday Inn of Craig to commemorate them for their hours of volunteering at The Memorial Hospital.

Samantha Johnston, service excellence officer, said the banquet is to honor the women who make life at the hospital a little easier.

"We have an annual banquet, which is the best way to show appreciation to them," Johnston said. "It's a chance for our employees and managers to thank them for the work they do at the hospital - recognize them for the hours they put in."

Veda Wyman took home the Volunteer of the Year Award, after volunteering for nine years and more than 1,591 hours at the hospital.

The 23 members of the Ladies Auxiliary select the volunteer of the year.

"For Veda, people love to be around her," Johnston said. "She volunteers a lot of hours, and no matter what, she commits her time to the hospital.

"Even if she has other things going on, or not feeling well, if she makes a commitment to be at the hospital, she's here."

Wyman, like the other Ladies Auxiliary members, fills a number of roles.

"They do a variety of things, but the first is man the reception desk from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.," Johnston said. "They also operate their own little business with the gift shop in the hospital."

Wyman wasn't the only volunteer recognized during the banquet.

Shirley Murphy was awarded after reaching the 5,000-hour mark.

Nina Lawton, 2,188 hours, and Francis Chisholm, 4,013 hours, were recognized for exceeding the 2,000- and 4,000-hours marks, respectively.

Virginia Elliott was awarded for surpassing the 1,000-hour mark, and Vickie Rickerby and Alice Snowden topped 500 hours.

Lois Stoffel and Myrt Wagner were awarded for 100 hours of volunteer service.

"The work the Pink Ladies volunteer is the equivalent of 2 1/2 full-time employees per year," Johnston said.
