While walking along the highway near our home Feb. 21, I was stunned by the number of cigarette butts I found. I usually carry a plastic bag and pick up the trash that is littering the highway near our home, and since most of the snow is melted, a person can find quite a bit. But, what is stunning to me is the thoughtlessness of drivers and passengers who smoke and throw those burning cigarette butts out of their windows.
True, the ground is wet right now, but the habit of pitching those burning cigarette butts out doesn't stop when the ground is dry and the grasses and weeds are very flammable.
Please use the ashtrays in your vehicles to extinguish your cigarettes. Starting that habit will perhaps save our roadsides and maybe even some fields and homes from the destruction of fire. Thank you for your consideration of starting a new habit that will be safer for everyone, including the wildlife.
