Gloria Moore: Adoption fees expensive

To the editor:

I am writing this letter in regard to all the animals in the Craig Animal Shelter that are up for adoption.

I took interest in adopting a kitten from the shelter that was in the paper. I was told that to adopt a kitten or even a cat from the shelter that I would have to pay $110.

That is outrageous for a darn cat.

I understand that the vet does a lot to ensure that the cats are in good health, but come on, that is way too much for a cat.

The Steamboat shelter charges $30. They should just give the cats away so they don't have so many cats in that small room.

The people that perform the necessary procedures on these animals to allow them to be adopted deserve to be paid for their time and material. I am certain, if you took your dog or cat in to the vet and got it spayed or nuetered, your bill would be higher than $110.00. On top of that someone has to pay for the food that animal eats while it is at the shelter. So I say $110.00 is a very fair price for adopting an animal that you know is desease free and will not be the cause of more stray animals. Allen Hischke

I have to say that I agree with Gloria. I have adopted all my pets from shelters. Just not this one. And all the pets that I have adopted ( so far 5) were and still are disease free and have been fixed at the shelter that I adopted them from. I was going to adopt a dog from the shelter here, but when they wanted to charge me 110.00 for a older female dog that had already been fixed I told them that I cant swing that. I understand that they need to make money for the animals that they already have, but that price??? When you can drive 45min and adopt one for half that price? I will go some where else.

So the question that pops into my mind is "if the animal is already spayed or neutered, shouldn't they be able to charge less than the $110. I think that the local vets charge somewhere around $250 to spay or neuter. That in my opinion is out of line even for small town Craig. Once again the price for living in Paradise.
