Craig After a recent strong showing, the GymStar Fun 'n' Fit Gymnastics team will travel to Castle Rock for the state finals.
The team of girls, ranging in age from 6 to 9 years old, will compete June 13 and 14.
After strong showings in Gypsum and Grand Junction, Kris Ingols, the GymStar Gymnastics coach, said she was impressed with her team's effort during a June 6 meet in Grand Junction.
"Our teams have been doing great," Ingols said. "In Grand Junction, the level threes came in second place, the level fours took fourth and the level fives came in second."
There were eight teams competing in the level three category, six teams in the level four category and two teams in level five.
"The girls did extremely well," Ingols said. "They've been working really hard. They've been in the gym for more than six hours a week, and they've done great."
Katelynn Baker and Autumn Henderson came from the Grand Junction with first place finishes in the level three category.
Zhonesay Moya had a second-place finish, Kyla Pogline finished 14th, and Kaitlyn Ahlstrom finished fifth in level three.
Allison Ingols-Irwin finished first in the level four division, Maggie Phalen finished 12th, and Brittnee Meats finished 14th.
Kayela Moya finished second in the level five division, and Amanda Scherbarth and Dajia Lewis finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Ingols, who has coached at the gym for three years, said each gymnast has improved as the season has progressed.
"Allison, Kayla Moya and Autumn Henderson are probably the three girls who have emerged as stars," she said.
Ingols said she has been able to watch each gymnast improve, because the team is made up completely of girls she has coached before.
"Each girl moves up and progresses every year," she said.
Ingols said she feels confident heading in to the state finals.
"They're secure in their abilities, and with how hard they've been training, I'm sure they'll do excellent," Ingols said. "They've been practicing twice a week. The level fours and fives have been practicing 2 1/2 hours twice a week."
