— When Isidro Arroyo first started helping children, he made sure they had something to eat at Christmas time.

Years later, and after his death, Arroyo's sons have maintained his legacy by continuing to help children.

The Seventh Annual Arroyo Memorial Golf Tournament will take place this Saturday at Yampa Valley Golf Course. The tournament is open to anyone, and registration costs $90.

Joe Arroyo, of Fruita, said the tournament has humble beginnings, but the message hasn't changed.

"At the time, the Peabody Coal Company had a golf tournament, and after they eliminated that, a couple of guys from the mine got together and started this," Arroyo said. "We took over from there, and decided it should be a memorial to my dad."

Joe Arroyo and his two brothers, Al and Isidro Jr., are originally from Mount Harris. Isidro Arroyo was the vice president of the coal workers union.

All the proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Craig.

"I see that the Boys & Girls Club is getting bigger and bigger in Craig," he said. "It helps parents, too, in case they have to work late, they know where the kids are."

Having the money benefit kids is a fitting way to honor Isidro Arroyo's memory, Joe said.

"It's a memorial for my dad," Arroyo said. "He always took care of little kids. Wherever he went, he helped kids out.

"That's the reason why we have the golf tournament - to benefit the kids."

Having the proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club is a way to reach the most kids, Arroyo said.

"Instead of giving scholarships for the kids, we give to the Boys & Girls Club to distribute it to everyone for meals or computers - whatever they need," he said. "We'll give everything to the Craig Boys & Girls Club, and let them do what they want to do with it."

Last year, the tournament raised "a couple thousand dollars" for the club, Arroyo said.

"It really depends on the weather," he said. "Last year, it was cold. This year, I'd better talk with Mother Nature and tell her to spread out the rain and not bring it all at once."

Stormy weather or not, Arroyo expects to see a crowd out on the golf course.

"There's always a lot of community participation," Arroyo said. "And I would love to see a lot of people from Craig come out and take part."

The tournament is a four-person scramble, and the cost is $90 per person.

Check-in for the tournament begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, and the tournament will open with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

"People can sign up right down to the nitty-gritty Friday night if they want to," Arroyo said.

There will be awards for the winners of the longest drive and closest to the pin contests.

"We'll find out who's good, and who's pulling my leg," Arroyo said.
