Craig If Moffat County's American Legion Post 62 baseball team didn't know what it was like to swing a wooden bat, it got a lesson June 4.
The team recently completed a tournament in Rifle, finishing seventh out of eight teams with a record of 1-3.
The team dropped its first game against Vernal (Utah), 4-1, then lost to Palisade, 8-3, and Fruita, 11-0, before defeating Rifle, 8-0.
Coach Justin Folley said his team ran into several good teams.
"We were playing tougher competition than what we see in our league," he said. "We held our own, though."
Switching from aluminum bats didn't help the team, Folley said.
"I don't think they were used to swinging a wooden bat, either," he said. "If they didn't know before, they know now."
The Moffat County High School baseball team had previously dropped both of its games against Rifle in Western Slope League play.
"Ben Williams threw a great ballgame against Rifle," Folley said. "He had a shutout and only allowed four hits, and Bubba Ivers swung the bat really well all weekend."
The team was supposed to have a doubleheader Tuesday against Summit, but the game was canceled because of rain.
A doubleheader scheduled for Saturday against Palisade was also canceled, because several players will be attending a football camp in Wyoming.
Overall, the team is playing .500 ball with a record of 4-4.
The next game is scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coal Ridge.

Question of the week
Should the Craig Chamber of Commerce revise its State of the County attendance policy to allow people to hear speakers without paying for a ticket?
