Kindra Ehlers: Voting on school name a valuable experience

June 11, 2009

To the editor:

As a parent of two elementary students, I would like to commend the Moffat County School District on its method of naming Sandrock Elementary.

My children found the process exciting and informational. Both of my boys voted to name the school after our veteran hero, Maj. William E. Adams. Both came home from school excited to tell me how voting works and couldn't wait to hear the results.

Although their "candidate" did not win, they were still happy to have been involved.

Specifcally to the Zimmermans, what is more patriotic than teaching our young children about democracy?

America was founded on democracy and the children should be encouraged to participate in any way they can. The teachers used the election as an important teaching experience. As a family, we used it as a teaching experience. We discussed the names and results of the election.

To imply that the school district made a mistake in allowing the children to participate is ludicrous. I am proud to say that my children were part of the history of Craig by voting in this election. If their children attend Sandrock Elementary, my boys will be able to tell them how the name came about and that they got to vote.

I am proud to be a member of a community that values its children and their schools. Keep up the good work, Moffat County School District.

We are a patriotic family and regularly write to our troops. I took my boys to the Memorial Day service at the cemetery.

I do believe we need to honor major Adams, as well as the rest of our veterans. I am teaching my children the value of honoring our veterans, also.

Please support our troops and honor our veterans.
