A deaf social is planned for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today behind Calvary Baptist Church, 1050 Yampa Ave.

The event includes a barbecue, skits and a deaf guest speaker, Christopher Harvey, of Broken Arrow, Okla.

The social is for everyone who is deaf, hard of hearing or anyone who has an interest in learning sign language. After the social, all are invited to Elkhead Reservoir for free fishing, with no license required. Take fishing poles and bait.

Farmers Market opens downtown June 18

The first Farmers Market of the year is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. June 18 at Alice Pleasant Park in downtown Craig.

The market features regionally homegrown and handmade products for sale.

Collecting Western History class June 17

Local resident Bill Mackin, founder of the Museum of Northwest Colorado's Cowboy & Gunfighter Museum, and author of "Cowboy and Gunfighter Collectibles," will teach the Wellness Wednesday course, Collecting Western History.

The course introduces community members to collecting Western historical artifacts and the lore of Wild West history and legend.

The four-week course begins June 17 and runs through July 18 at American Legion Post 62, 1055 Moffat County Road 7. The class is free to Moffat County residents ages 62 and older. The cost is $60 for students.

Mackin has collected guns, antique cowboy gear and Western artifacts for 60 years. In addition to his book, he also has written more than 100 magazine articles, and he serves as Western Americana appraiser/consultant and a consultant for Schroeder's Antique Guide.

CNCC sponsoring trip to New England

Colorado Northwestern Community College is sponsoring an adult learning adventure trip to Vermont from Sept. 19 to 25.

In Vermont, students will view shipwrecks from the 1800s in Lake Champlain, and visit museums, Revolutionary War sites, a seventh-generation maple farm and many other historic sites.

The group also will tour Boston, including Beacon Hill and the Old North Church.
