John and Doris Zimmerman: Disappointed in choice

To the editor:
As friends of Maj. Bill Adams and his family, we were very disappointed when we saw Saturday's edition of your paper.
We were disappointed in the Moffat County School Board's experiment in letting children vote on something that they knew little about. The disclaimer given by the schools was that the teachers tried not to influence the children in their voting. They may not have influenced them directly or deliberately, but perhaps they influenced them, nonetheless.
There is evidence America's schools, in general, are not teaching patriotism and history as past generations were taught. Maybe the students picked up on teachers' feelings about that particular war. Maybe the students were not helped to understand the reason Bill gave his life. Maybe they were too young for such a weighty decision.
It has been 38 years since Bill was killed.
His courage and gallantry were extraordinary enough that he was awarded our nation's highest honor. He brought honor to his country and to Craig. It is past time we honor him with some kind of substantial memorial.
We hope the people of Craig will come together on this issue as we have on many other issues before.

Question of the week
Should the Craig Chamber of Commerce revise its State of the County attendance policy to allow people to hear speakers without paying for a ticket?
