Police make arrests in alleged assault case

— The Craig Police Department arrested three Craig people and issued an arrest warrant for a fourth Friday stemming from an alleged assault a few days earlier.

The three people arrested, according to a police department news release issued Sunday afternoon, were:

• A 17-year-old whose name was withheld because he is a minor.

• Brice Boling, 20.

• Johnny Tom, 20.

They were each taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, a Class 4 felony.

The arrest warrant was issued for Garrett Verplanck, 19. He is being sought on suspicion of first-degree assault, a Class 3 felony.

The arrests and the arrest warrant followed an investigation by the Police Department and the 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Police reported that Verplanck told officers Friday that he was going to turn himself in that day, but he failed to appear. As result, the arrest warrant was obtained.

The arrests stem from an incident reported about 1:17 a.m. July 15 in the 590 block of Stout Street. In all, eight Craig residents were involved in the disturbance, police said.

Officers were told that there was a fistfight between four people.

Later, two people involved in that fight returned with two other people. They returned armed with 2-by-4s and pipes.

During the second fight, one of the suspects hit a victim in the face with a 2-by-4 or other "similar-type blunt object," police said.

"As a result of the assault with the blunt object, the victim suffered serious bodily injury, including multiple fractured bones, and was transported via ambulance to the hospital," police reported.

The four victims of the second fight range in age from 21 to 29 years old.

The Police Department reported that Verplanck is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 174 pounds and has blond hair and hazel eyes.

If anyone sees Verplanck, they are to call the Police Department at 824-8111 and report his location.

As usuall your reporting of the news is not up to date and is wrong. Garrett Verplanck turned his self in on Sunday as he told the Craig police department he would .This needs to be taken off your web page and a retractment put in the paper tomorrow if not garretts attorney will be in contact this is faulse information you and KRAI is publishing around this small town with out checking out your facts before print time and this is not the first time. It would be nice to have a ligetamite news papeer who actually checks out there facts before printing them. I guesss this is just to much to ask of you guys. Where did you go to journalism school any way. Candeas Verplanck -Garretts Mother

Spoken from the mouth of a exemplary parent of a kid just doing what kids do: brawling in the street?

Looks to me that he said he would turn himself in Friday and he didnt. Sunday comes a few days after Friday on my calendar.

If the kid wasn't out causing trouble then you wouldn't have to worry about false reporting would you?

I am amazed that those of you who find time to criticize this family are the ones that are constantly criticizing the paper for crappy reporting! Now suddenly the newspaper is the gospel! WOW!

Were any of you there? Did any of you see any of this happen? Do you know this boy or his parents?

Maybe there is more to this story....The real question is...Do you believe everything you read?

Garrett's mother......Newspapers do get wrong info at times, but I would guess that this time they got their info from the Craig Police Dept. If that is the case, I would think that Garrett's attorney can do nothing about your complaint. I would also assume that if Garrett were not involved, the Craig PD would not be looking for him. On the other hand, if Garrett has ever been in trouble, I know that the P.D. will more often then not look toward your son to blame, whether he was part of anything or not. If he's not a part of this mess, then let the lawyer handle it and hopefully it will all turn out well for your son.

Craig_gal, Thank you. You got to admit there is some outlandish stuff in these posts.

Looks to me like the dog owner has no more luck keeping track of her dog than the woman with the kid brawling in the street.
