Craig residents who look to the sky at sundown today will be treated to a 30 to 45 minute fireworks display.

Craig Fire/Rescue will shoot off the fireworks from Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane.

Will Daigle, a firefighter with Crag Fire/Rescue, said viewers can expect a show similar to last year's but with a few more bigger shells.

This year will be the last that fire departments can use 10-inch shells, he said. The bigger shells mean the fireworks can reach heights of almost 1,000 feet and produce a much larger display.

Several 5-inch shells, which also produce large displays, will be used, as well.

During the show, a total of 750 rounds of fireworks will be set off.

The city of Craig and Moffat County funded this year's display, which cost about $10,000. Although that number is higher than years past, it coincides with a 25-percent increase in the price of fireworks, making the scope of this year's display similar to last year.

Daigle said the fire department will try to find a window to start the show if rain becomes an issue.

Currently, AccuWeather is predicting periods of sunshine and a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

"We haven't set a rain date," Daigle said. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

A perimeter around the area where the fireworks are being shot off will be roped off for safety reasons, Daigle said, but the high school parking lot will be open.

He said several people watch the fireworks from atop the sandrocks.

"Just be aware, and try not to get too close," Daigle said. "You don't have to be right underneath it to enjoy the show."
