Adding two wrestlers with a combined 48 wins to a roster can do wonders for a team.
The Bulldogs proved that Thursday night in Gypsum.
Boosted by the return from the injured list by senior Ethan Kinner (24-4) and junior Nathan Tomlin (24-4), the Moffat County High School wrestling team rolled over host Eagle Valley, 54-18.
"Tomlin and Kinner haven't been on the mat in a while, so it was good to get them some time out there," MCHS coach Roman Gutierrez said. "They did well. They looked good. The whole team looked good."
Of the 14 weight classes, five matches were wrestled.
Moffat County won all five the same way - by pin.
Take away Tomlin's 3:48 win, and the Bulldogs averaged 1:24 per pin victory the other four.
Kinner (125) didn't need much time to re-acquaint himself with the competition, taking a quick 2-0 lead with a takedown and rolling his opponent over to earn the pin at 1:20 of the first round.
Tomlin (140) had what proved to be the toughest match of the night, entering the second frame against his opponent tied, 0-0.
With 12 seconds left in the second frame, Tomlin ended the match with a takedown and pin.
"Nathan and Ethan both, you could tell they hadn't been on the mat," Gutierrez said. "Nathan wrestled a good kid and finally got in the position to pin him, and he pinned him."
The Bulldogs' three remaining matches went as smoothly, if not more smoothly, than the first two.
Cody Nelson (103) won for the fifth consecutive meet, earning a pin in 1:57.
"Cody looked good," Gutierrez said. "They all looked good as a whole. As a team, they all wrestled well."
Jesse Breslin (152) and Troy Vernon (160) blew through the Devils, as well.
Breslin smothered his opponent to the tune of a 1:20 pin after leading 7-0, and Vernon quickly took care of his opponent in 62 seconds.
"Jesse and Troy wrestled about how I expected them to," Gutierrez said. "Nathan and Ethan were the only two we were really concerned about. The rest of (Eagle Valley) are young and we pretty well handled them."
Moffat County travels to Palisade on Thursday in their last tune-up before the state regional tournament beginning Feb. 13 in Montrose.
"Hopefully, we can get in a couple more matches next week and sharpen up a bit before regionals," Gutierrez said. "Not that they look sluggish, we just want them sharp, sharp."
Gutierrez said he expects Kye Adams (knee injury) to return to the lineup Thursday.
