— Craig resident Michelle Moore is trying to stay positive in the midst of change.

Moore's daughter, Amanda, 8, is a second-grade student at East Elementary School. When the Moffat County School District makes effective its elementary school attendance area changes, Amanda may be among 308 students who will be transferred to a new, fourth elementary school this fall.

"I would like her to stay where she is just because I really like East," Moore said. "They've been really good to her."

Nevertheless, Moore added she doesn't think her daughter would have trouble adjusting to another elementary school next year.

"I wouldn't have a problem with her going to the new (elementary school) if (she) had to," Moore said.

School district officials and elementary school principals plan to gather input from parents such as Moore next week at a series of meetings.

The first Parent Accountability Committee meeting where parents can receive more information and voice their input about attendance area changes is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at East Elementary School, 600 Texas Ave.

Similar hour-long gatherings take place at 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ridgeview Elementary School, 600 Westridge Road, and Sunset Elementary School, 800 W. Seventh Street, respectively.

The same information will be presented at all meetings. Parents may attend any of the meetings, regardless of where their children are enrolled.

District administrators will use parent input and recommendations from its School Accountability Committee to finalize attendance area changes. The Moffat County School Board is scheduled to vote on the new boundaries at its monthly meeting Feb. 26.

Superintendent Pete Bergmann stressed that proposed changes are tentative.

"This is still a work in progress," he said.

Attendance area changes are designed to address a new district grade configuration, as well as a fourth elementary school.

Craig Intermediate School currently houses fifth- and sixth-graders, while most preschoolers attend the Early Childhood Center, located inside the district's administrative building on Yampa Avenue. After CIS is converted to a fourth elementary school this summer, however, preschoolers and fifth-graders will attend one of four elementary schools, while sixth-graders will go to a newly constructed middle school.

Bus routes also will change next school year but will not be finalized until after the district gathers parent input.

The way in which parents request transfers to other elementary schools also will change next year.

If the district receives more transfer requests than it has room for, it could hold a public lottery to determine which requests are granted.

The district plans to release more details about the proposed transfer process at February PAC meetings.
