Craig The Yahoo rankings are getting a little shake-up this week, as six of the top 10 players are lesser-known commodities to most fans. Players like Jeff Green, Paul Millsap, David Lee and Mehmet Okur all are making a name for themselves this year.
Let's take a look at three of the biggest surprises in the Yahoo fantasy basketball game during the past week.
My favorite player of the group has to be Jeff Green. Green's ownership numbers took a big jump the first two months of the season, going from a little more than 30 percent owned in November to close to 80 percent now. Thanks in part to his 18.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, two assists and a steal during the past month, owners took notice and added him in droves making him one of the best waiver wire steals this season.
The second biggest surprise in this week's rankings is Andrei Kirilenko. It's not really a surprise to most fantasy junkies that AK-47 put up the top line of the week with 55.6 shooting from the field, 100 percent from the line and 13.0 points, 7.5 boards, two assists, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks. Kirilenko is among the top players in the league in my mind with his talent, athleticism and enthusiasm for the game and players like him are few and far between in the NBA.
The third player who really caught my eye this past week had to be David Lee of the New York Knicks. Folks, this guy can flat out play. Ever since the Knicks traded Zach Randolph, Lee has been playing like a man possessed. He has more than 20 double doubles on the season and has been tearing up stat sheets pretty much all season. Last week, he averaged 17.7 points, 13.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, two steals and a block per game. Lee is on his way to becoming a star in the NBA, and he won't do it with flash and flare, but with hustle, sweat and determination.
So who's out there on the waiver wire that you can plug in and play right away?
• Erick Dampier, center, Dallas Mavericks - Over his last three games, the big man is averaging a respectable 7 points and 9.7 rebounds to go along with 1.3 blocks. He should be owned in deeper leagues by now.
• Jarret Jack, point guard/shooting guard, Indiana Pacers - I've been holding out on Jack, and now is the time to recommend him. He's getting plenty of playing time in Indy, which has led to 21.3 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal per game during the Past three games. As long as he keeps getting minutes, he should keep producing for the near future.
My buy-low candidate of the week is Brandon Roy of the Portland Trailblazers. He has an injured right hamstring right now, and I'm sure some owners are a little wary of him, so I would be bold and try to snatch him off someone's hands if they're willing to part ways with him.
That's all for this week, people. Have a great week in fantasy basketball.
