Check your home's radon levels
Craig January is Colorado Radon Action Month, and Moffat County residents are urged to test their homes for radon, a radioactive gas responsible for approximately 1,400 Colorado cancer deaths each year. The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas enters homes through cracks in the floor or spaces around utility pipes and accumulates unless properly vented. Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in smokers.
For a free, three-day Radon testing kit, call Moffat County Cooperative Extension office at 824-9180 or Routt County Cooperative Extension office at 879-0825.
Folic Acid Awareness Week through Sunday
During National Folic Acid Awareness Week, taking place through Sunday, women of childbearing age are being encouraged to take a daily multivitamin and to eat foods rich in folate before becoming pregnant to prevent birth defects in their newborns.
The U.S. Public Health Service recommends all women of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms of folic acid by taking a multivitamin daily and eating fortified grains. Fortified grains include enriched cereals, pasta, rice, bread, dried beans and peas. Peanut butter and orange juice also are good sources of folic acid. For more information about folic acid, visit the National Council on Folic Acid's Web site, www.folicacidinfo.org, or call 303-692-2700.
Post office asks that boxes be clear of snow
With the arrival of snow, ice and difficult weather conditions, the Craig Post Office is asking postal customers to always clear a safe, accessible path to mailboxes.
Post office requests include:
• Make sure the mailbox is visible and free of snow and ice.
• Make sure mailboxes are safely accessible for letter carriers.
• Clear the mailbox area of snow, sleet, slush, ice and debris.
If mailboxes are blocked off and conditions are too difficult, letter carriers must consider safety and accessibility first and are instructed not to deliver to mailboxes and locations considered too difficult or unsafe to access.
For more information, call the Craig Post Office at 824-8506.
