One game below .500 entering Sunday's doubleheader against Gunnison B, the Moffat County Bulldog Hockey Club was looking to pull even on the season.

They'll have to wait.

The Bulldogs (4-5-3 Rocky Mountain Youth Hockey league) battled to back-to-back 2-2 ties against the Black at Jorgensen Ice Arena.

Moffat County ended its four-game road trip in Gunnison 0-2-2, tallying two points in the RMYHL standings.

Teams are awarded one point for a tie.

"It was kind of uneventful," Bulldogs coach Gene Carson said. "We had a ton of penalties that really hurt us. If you want a theme for the weekend, it was that penalties were our demise."

The Bulldogs were sent to the penalty box 15 times during Sunday's two-game set, while the Black were penalized four times.

Gunnison B (2-5-2 RMYHL) took advantage of the Moffat County miscues in Game 1, scoring both of its goals on the power play.

The first came 11:31 into the opening period, giving the home team a 1-0 lead that didn't last long.

With 13 seconds remaining in the frame and Moffat County on the power play, Jacob Baron deposited a feed from Cole Dubois into the back of the Gunnison net, tying the game at one.

"It was a perfect slap shot," Carson said. "It was about four inches off the ice, and their goalie never even saw it."

Brandon Roedder put the Black back on top 11:34 into the second period and Gunnison hung on to the one-goal lead until midway through the third.

Bulldog center Colt Criswell tied the game at the 7:51 mark in the final frame, depositing a feed from Jarrod Stillon past Gunnison goalie Daniel Reinhardt.

Moffat County took its first lead of the Sunday series 9:25 into the first period of Game 2.

Down a man because of an elbowing penalty called on Ian Forgay, Nathan Tomlin broke away for a short-handed goal - his second tally of the season - putting the visitors up, 1-0.

Gunnison answered less than five minutes later behind Roedder's sixth goal of the season, and the teams entered the intermission tied at one.

Bridger Singer put the Black up, 2-1, midway through the second period, beating Moffat County goalie Spencer Wayman for his first goal of the series.

With Forgay in the box in the third, Moffat County once again struck while short-handed. John Strahan scored the game-tying goal unassisted.

"We pulled out an all-out effort there at the end," Carson said. "We killed a five-on-three and really stepped up to get the tie."

Moffat County gets another crack at the .500 mark Wednesday. The Bulldogs face Steamboat Springs at 7:45 p.m.

Jacob Blevins re-injured his knee Sunday. Carson said the forward is questionable for Wednesday's game at Steamboat Springs. : Moffat County scored six goals during the weekend series. "You can't win when you don't score goals," Carson said.
