Snowmobile club offering appreciation event for area veterans
February 27, 2009
It's a reason to get out and ride.
But, the Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club is hoping to achieve something more this weekend, club President Stan Fox said.
Fox said the Soldier's Ride, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, is the club's way to thank veterans for their service.
"Myself and the club members felt very strongly about giving back to the vets who have participated, whether it be present or past," Fox said. "Just a small thank you and appreciation for what they've done."
The ride is a free snowmobile tour for current and past veterans and their families and is sponsored by NOWECOS, Elkhorn Outfitters and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265.
This is the second year for the Soldier's Ride.
Last year, just one veteran took advantage of the trip.
This year, however, all six sleds used in the event will be occupied with veterans and their family members.
The snowmobiles, tour and helmets for the veterans have all been donated by Elkhorn Outfitters.
Riders will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Craig Middle School and load up before traveling to Elkhead Ranch, north of Elkhead reservoir.
At Elkhead Ranch, riders will be taught riding etiquette before taking off to the Pilot's Knob area north of Hayden.
Lunch, provided by the VFW, will be served at about noon, and more riding will follow for the rest of the day.
"A great day out on the snow, there are some gorgeous sites," Fox said about the trip.
Veterans will be given a certificate of appreciation by NOWECOS before finishing up the day.
"Last year, when it cleared up a little bit, the scene was just phenomenal, looking back toward Hahn's Peak and across the valley," Fox said.
