A late longtime Moffat County public servant was honored Tuesday night during a special presentation that included a letter from Gov. Bill Ritter.
Saed F. Tayyara, a Moffat County commissioner, died Nov. 29, 2008, after a fight with cancer. He served in local politics for about 30 years, including three terms as Craig mayor and two terms on the Moffat County Commission.
At Tuesday's 2009 State of the County event, commissioner Tom Mathers used part of his county address to remember Tayyara and his years of public service. He read a letter from Ritter, dated Feb. 17, to the crowd in attendance.
"On behalf of the people of Colorado, I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to the friends and family of Saed F. Tayyara during this difficult time," Ritter wrote in the letter. "Saed was a valued member of our community, striving to make a difference in the lives of others and always serving as a friendly face throughout Moffat County."
Tayyara "committed much of his time" to the local community, the governor wrote, and his "interest and passion" for politics earned him an award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. The award recognized his patriotism, service, trustworthiness and leadership, the letter added.
"The many friends, colleagues, peers and family members he touched will miss him greatly. The service he provided on behalf of our state is greatly appreciated. : I hope that the love and support of those who surround you will help provide comfort and ssolace during this difficult time."
But Ritter's letter wasn't the only formal recognition given to Tayyara.
U.S. Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo., also wrote about Tayarra, a Syrian native who moved to the United States in 1963.
"He was a true statesman, always putting the needs of his community above all else," the congressman wrote. "I enjoyed his enthusiasm for life, his dedication to his work and his embodiment of a true-blue American citizen.
"I am sure he will not be easy to replace. I enjoyed his steady hand and long-range vision. He took such pride in his service to community. It was an uplifting experience working with him."
The Colorado Senate issued a proclamation in December 2008, honoring Tayyara's life and family. The proclamation, which also was read during Tuesday's event, came at the request of senators Al White, R-Hayden, and Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction.
Tayyara will be remembered as a "public servant who was dedicated to the needs of the people in his community," the proclamation reads.
"He was known for his positive outlook and his willingness to hear both sides of an issue. Commissioner Tayyara : was a proud American who will be missed by all who knew him."
Karen Tayyara, Saed's wife of 14 years, attended Tuesday's event. She said she was "very pleased that they remembered to think of him and all that he contributed."
"The biggest part of his life," she said, "was to become part of his community."
