— When Moffat County and Glenwood Springs have matched up the past few years in girls high school basketball, the game usually holds conference title and playoff seeding implications.

Friday night's game in Craig was no different.

Glenwood Springs avenged an earlier home loss to the Bulldogs on Friday night, pacing its way to a 52-42 road victory.

"We just weren't making any shots," MCHS coach Craig Mortensen said. "We worked hard and got some good looks, they just didn't fall."

The Demons stretched a seven-point first quarter lead to 11 at the half, and 16 heading into the final frame.

"Our goal was to come out right off the bat and play four, full-throttle quarters," Demons coach Bryan Derby said. "And they did that for me. They played one heck of a ballgame."

The victory was the sixth consecutive for Glenwood Springs and sent the Bulldogs to their first loss in eight games.

Sophomore Kenzie Kuhn scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Demons.

Senior Breanna Richardson added 11.

Senior Alicia Nelson scored a team-high 13 for Moffat County. Fellow senior Ariel Sanchez pitched in with 10.

The teams exchanged 4-point runs to open the contest, until back-to-back 3-pointers by Kuhn and Tosha Derby midway through the period put the Demons (15-3 overall, 10-1 Western Slope League) up six. Kuhn hit her second three of the frame moments later, extending Glenwood's lead to eight, prompting Mortensen to call a timeout.

A successfully drawn up play to MCHS sophomore post player Lauren Roberts, closed the quarter with the Demons up 14-7.

Bulldog point guard Kylie Bauman nailed a jumper to open the second quarter, but Kuhn's third basket from downtown pushed the visitor's lead to eight.

Midway through the frame, back-to-back buckets by senior Courtney Edington and a layup by Sanchez pulled Moffat County (12-8 overall, 9-2 WSL) within two, at 19-17.

Glenwood senior Katrina Selsor ignited a 9-0 Glenwood run to end the period, scoring six points in the frame's final 2:30 for a 28-17 Demon lead at the half.

A bucket by Bauman, followed by a 3-pointer by Nelson, closed the gap to six less than two minutes into the third, but Glenwood answered with an 11-2 run to halt any chance of a Bulldog comeback and headed in to the final frame ahead, 41-27.

Moffat County opened its third consecutive quarter with a quick basket to cut the deficit to 12, but a free throw by Derby followed by a jumper from Richardson pushed the lead to 15.

Nelson hit a 3-pointer to pull the Bulldogs back to within a dozen, but four free throws by Kuhn pushed it back to 16.

Nelson drained a bucket from downtown and Sanchez stole the ensuing inbound pass and calmly laid it in cutting the deficit to 10, accounting for the final margin of victory.

Notes:

Moffat County won the first meeting this season between the conference rivals, 53-36, Jan. 23 in Glenwood Springs.
