Steamboat Springs For the second year in a row, Yampa Valley history aficionados are in for a treat.
The Northwest Colorado Parade of Museums will start at 7:30 a.m. today from the Wyman Museum in Craig.
After last year’s Parade of Lights in Craig, Wyman Museum office manager Nicky Boulger thought there were enough museums in the valley to warrant a Parade of Museums.
“A lot of people don’t realize what we have in this area,” she said. “And another nice thing is our museums are all unique and different. They’re not the same. They have different collections and displays.”
Boulger added that the parade brought people and families together during the holidays and provided them an opportunity to learn about where they live.
Judy Green, a Hayden Heritage Center board member, said the tour showcased history of local communities.
“It helps to bond the museums in the valley and to show the residents of the Yampa Valley the treasures our museums protect and the heritage our museums protect,” she said.
This year’s parade starts at 7:30 a.m. from Wyman. A bus will take participants at 8 a.m. to the Hayden Heritage Center, where they’ll take a tour and have a light brunch. At 9 a.m., the group will travel to the Tracks and Trails Museum in Oak Creek, take a tour and have a snack of cookies and cider. Then at 11 a.m., they’ll leave for a tour at the Carpenter Ranch house near Hayden. The group will go at noon to the Museum of Northwest Colorado in Craig for a tour and lunch.
At 1:30 p.m., they’ll head back to Wyman for the conclusion of the parade. Boulger said that stop would consist of a museum tour and dessert. Santa will be available to lead free sleigh rides. There also will be free crafts for children.
The cost is $15 or $10 for seniors ages 62 and older. Boulger said the fees cover food and the costs of transporting the group by bus.
She said last year’s parade attracted about 25 participants. This year, Boulger said 30 tickets already have been sold. About 20 more tickets are available, she said.
New to this year’s parade are the stops at the Tracks and Trails Museum and Carpenter Ranch. Last year, the Tread of Pioneers Museum in Steamboat Springs was included in the parade. Boulger said she wanted to mix things up.
“This is all our history and our heritage, and I’d like to get it out there,” she said.
