For the first time, Colorado Outdoors — the official bimonthly magazine of the Colorado Division of Wildlife — will publish a calendar featuring the magazine’s photography.
The “2010 Colorado Division of Wildlife Calendar” also provides a month-by-month guide to major hunting season dates, license application deadlines, fishing information and detailed descriptions of watchable wildlife happenings and festivals across the state.
Calendars are $6.95 and may be purchased online at www.wildlife.state.co.us or at DOW offices statewide.
BLM to expand fence tagging
The Bureau of Land Management has issued a new directive to its field offices to look at marking all wire fences on federal land to prevent various bird species from flying into the fences and dying.
Two of the species in question reside in Moffat County — greater sage-grouse and Columbian sharp-tailed grouse.
A recent BLM study shows the birds have trouble identifying wire fences in the air and can become trapped. All of the species in question are under review for a possible listing under the Endangered Species Act.
Officials said in a news release Wednesday that listing the birds as endangered could have numerous impacts on livestock grazing and future energy development in the West.
They added that acting now to keep populations high could keep the birds from becoming endangered.
The BLM Little Snake Field Office in Craig has marked new wire fences on public land for some time before the directive came down, said Tim Novotny, wildlife biologist for the Craig office.
However, the announcement asks field offices to also consider marking all old fences, as well, Novotny added. Officials are not sure how much the directive might cost the office, but costs could be low if only flagging is required.
