With a 33-13 overall record, Moffat County High School boys varsity wrestling had a successful weekend.
With the Warrior Classic looming, it’s added momentum for what coach Roman Gutierrez said will be a grueling weekend ahead for the Bulldogs.
The team competed Friday and Saturday at Union (Utah) High School, finishing with a 3-2 record.
Gutierrez said the meet pointed out several things the team will need to work on before the Friday Warrior Classic at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.
“I think we wrestled well, we just have to keep improving in different places,” he said. “I think our younger kids are making the same mistakes they made the week before, so we’ll need to get those cleared up.”
With injuries and ineligible wrestlers in Union, the team was at a disadvantage.
“We’ll need to get those things cleared up, too,” Gutierrez said.
But before the Bulldogs can wrestle in the Warrior Classic, the team needs to work on clearing up some problems, Gutierrez said.
“We’re still making lots of little mistakes,” he said. “We can’t get off the bottom — we have been much more aggressive on top. The bottom position has been a lot of trouble, but we’ll get it figured out.”
Moffat County had four wrestlers finish with perfect 5-0 records.
Jacob Teeter (112-pound class), Cody Nelson (119 pounds), Nathan Tomlin (152 pounds) and Cody Adams (189 pounds) finished with perfect records for the weekend.
Tomlin also had five pins, while Teeter, Nelson and Adams had three.
Justin McAlexander (2-3 record, one pin), Todd Stewart (2-3, two pins) and Wyatt Uptain (3-2, three pins) wrestled well in their first action of the year.
Charlie Griffiths continued his hot streak, wrestling to a 4-1 record with three pins in the 140-pound class, and Scott Mann finished with a 3-2 record with three pins in the 171-pound class.
Moffat County fell to Vernal, 48-30, and Rangely, 48-30.
The team won against Union High School, 38-35, Duchesne, 48-28, and a team of extras, 52-6.
The upcoming Warrior Classic will be the Bulldogs’ first big test of the season, Gutierrez said.
“It’s probably tougher than the state tournament,” he said. “It has 32 teams in it. It’s a 32-man bracket, and you advance through the bracket as an individual.”
But Moffat County has several individuals who could go far in Grand Junction, Gutierrez said.
“With the good kids we have, I feel comfortable with Tomlin, Nelson and Charlie (this weekend),” he said.
