Sports briefs: CMS basketball tourney Saturday

Craig Middle School boys seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams will host a season-ending tournament Saturday.

The eighth-grade team will play at the middle school, 915 Yampa Ave., and the seventh-graders will play at Sandrock Elementary School, 201 E. Ninth St.

Both teams square off against Rangely at 9 a.m. Meeker plays Steamboat Springs at 10 a.m. The losers of the first games play at 11 a.m., and the championship games are at noon.

The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for students.

Hoop shoot basketball scheduled for Dec. 12

The Elks Club is again hosting the annual basketball hoop shoot contest, starting at 8 a.m. Dec. 12 at Sandrock Elementary School.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the contest begins at 9 a.m., with a chili lunch at the Elks Lodge, 43 W. Victory Way.

Awards will be given out during the lunch for the 8- to 9-year-old group, the 10- to 11-year-olds and the 12- to 13-year-old group.

First-place winners will later travel to Salida to compete for the state hoop shoot contest.

If any participants qualify, they can later travel to Denver to compete at the national level contest. Nationals are at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The Elks Club funds the trip.

Bad Dogs Winter Rumble this weekend

The Craig Bad Dogs youth wrestling team will host the Bad Dogs Winter Rumble starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane.

Teams from all over the Western Slope will be in attendance, and the cost is $2 to enter.
