More than $100 million in public projects are being built: A new hospital, new schools and a new community college campus.

Infrastructure improvements also are occurring.

Several new businesses and housing developments are in the works, and some businesses are making improvements, as well.

The conclusion that can be made from this: our community is investing in its own future, stimulating its own economy, rather than needing or waiting for federal money to do so.

There is federal money that has come into the community, but many of the large-scale projects are funded largely with local dollars.

That hasn't always been an easy prospect, acquiring additional public money, but it did happen, and the community should be acknowledged for it.

To the Editorial Board, these proactive measures to secure the future are refreshing and are signs that our community is being proactive and taking care of itself.

Not all communities can say the same thing and are relying on the federal government for rescue.

But not here.

In the face of an uncertain and struggling economy, being proactive helps lessen the blow and insulates Craig and Moffat County a bit from the difficulties other areas are having.

The board considers these projects and developments another indicator of the community's character.

Craig and Moffat County's warm and giving ways have long been established, be it through Relay for Life, United Way, or myriad other fundraisers on behalf of a cause or a private resident.

Adding the ongoing projects and developments to that characteristic does nothing but make our community a more attractive place for out-of-town visitors, and potential new residents and businesses.

It's certainly not a perfect community we have, but it is a great one with much going for it, a fact people don't always remember, but one this board doesn't mind reminding them of.
