The 2009 municipal election will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way.

Up for election will be four Craig City Council seats and the mayor's seat.

Six candidates are running for council: incumbents Byron Willems, Terry Carwile and Gene Bilodeau, who was appointed in February 2008 to fill Rod Compton's vacated seat, and hopefuls Francisco Reina, Jennifer Riley and Joe Bird.

All voters may vote for four council candidates. The top four vote getters among the candidates will take positions on the council.

Three of the available council seats are four-year terms and the other is a two-year term.

The shorter term is the remainder of Compton's tenure.

According to the Craig City Charter, an appointment to fill a vacated council seat is good until the next city election.

The fourth highest vote getter will win the shorter term.

Mayor Don Jones is running unopposed for his third consecutive term.

This will be the last consecutive term Jones is eligible for. He would have to sit out one election to run again.

Officials said they hope more local voters participate in this election than in other recent years.

It remains to be seen if the election enthusiasm shown in the November 2008 general election, when roughly 70 percent of registered county voters cast a vote, will carry over to Tuesday's ballot.

Voting records show that participation has not passed 700 votes since at least before 2001.

Voter turnout in those elections is listed below:

• 2001: 370 voters out of 5,293 registered voters, 6.9 percent.

• 2003: 526 voters out of 5,399 registered voters, 9.7 percent.

• 2005: 549 voters out of 5,334 registered voters, 10.2 percent.

• 2007: 671 voters out of 5,134 registered voters, 13 percent.
