- Norma Torres and Carlos Silva, of Craig, announce the birth of their son, Aroldo Jesus Silva-Torres, at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 27, 2008, at The Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20.75 inches long. His maternal grandparents are Maria Elena Martinez and Raul Torres, both of Mexico. His paternal grandparents are Ana Maria Gandarilla and Tomas Silva, both of Mexico. The baby was welcomed home by Carlos Raul Silva-Torres.
- Michaela Ann Booco and Davon Lance Smith, of Craig, announce the birth of their son, Gage Tyler Smith, at 7:28 p.m. Aug. 22, 2008, at The Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches long. His maternal grandparents are Jim and Kristi Hankins and Larry and Diana Booco, all of Craig. His paternal grandparents are Mildred and D.J. Smith of Vidalia, Ga. His great-grandparents are Michael and Judnita McIntyre, of Craig, and Ilda and the late Gordon D. Booco, of Hayden.
- Rosa Tarango and Rafael Lopez, of Craig, announce the birth of their son, Jordy Lopez Tarango, at 8:40 a.m. Aug. 29, 2008, at The Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 2.9 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long. The baby was welcomed home by his brother, Erik.
- Cameron and Kelsey Allen announce the birth of their twin daughters, Cadence and Kennedy Allen, on May 15. 2008. Their maternal grandparents are Kim and Conna Chapman, of Monroe, Utah. Their paternal grandparents are Greg and Debbie Allen, of Delta, Utah. Their great-grandparents are Carl and Fredonne Chapman, of Craig, Dee and the late Doris Gibbons, of Nibley, Utah, Loyd and Ann Roper, of Idaho, and John and Gloria Allen, of Utah.

If you are like me, for two weeks in August, you became an “Armchair Olympic Judge.” Over the past four years, none of us has watched any gymnastics or diving, and yet, with a few hours of viewing the games and listening to NBC’s commentators, we feel completely qualified to dispute the scores given to athletes. We are casual critics who lack real experience. We are Americans and being presumptuous is in our blood. Whether it is watching sports, listening to our doctors, finishing our homework or even practicing our religion, on our own authority, we just know better.

The Colorado Statewide Independent Living Council is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Holiday Inn of Craig, 300 S. Colorado Highway 13. A 15- to 30-minute public comment session is scheduled at 1 p.m. for people who wish to address the SILC about issues concerning individuals with disabilities in and around Craig. Sign language interpreters will be available throughout the meeting, which will be fully accessible.
