With hundreds of kids out trick-or-treating tonight, the Craig Police Department is set to bolster the number of officers on duty. The primary goal for the Police Department on Halloween is simple, Police Department Captain Jerry DeLong said. “Making sure the kids are safe,” he said, adding that patrols would center on high-traffic trick-or-treating areas. “We’ll try to get downtown and at the mall with the officers. A lot of that depends on calls for service.”

Halloween originally was a Celtic holiday, celebrating a new year at a time when it was believed the veil between the living and the dead was the thinnest. Whether costumes entered the picture as part of the celebration or, as some believe, to scare off or fit in (so as not to be mistaken for the living and taken away) with the ghosts of the dead still is debated.
