DOW holding hunter crash course

— The Colorado Division of Wildlife is sponsoring a Hunter Education "Crash Course" from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Maybell Community Center in Maybell. No late admittance will be allowed.

Participants of this course will receive a temporary Hunter Education Card valid until Dec. 31.

This also will be a completion class for the Internet Course. Any participants who have completed the Hunter Education course online and bring all of the required paperwork with them will have the opportunity to get their permanent Hunter Education Card.

Applications available for Elks scholarships

One of the main goals of the Elks Club, nationally and locally, is to give time and money to local youths. The Elks National Foundation awards nearly $2.3 million in scholarships to students every year. Applications for these scholarships are available from the Craig Elks Lodge No. 1577.

Awards given include:

• Two first-place awards of $60,000 each over four years; one goes to a male and one to a female

• Two second-place awards for $40,000, each over four years; one goes to a male and one to a female

• Two third-place awards for $20,000, each over four years

• Two fourth-place awards for $16,000, each over four years

• Two fifth-place awards for $12,000, each over four years

• Four sixth-place awards for $10,000, each over four years

• Four seventh-place awards for $8,000, each over four years

• 482 runners-up awards for $4,000, each over four years

The deadline to apply is Jan. 9, 2009.

Preschool scholarships available until Oct. 30

Scholarships for free preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds are still available through the Moffat County School District until Thursday. Applying takes only five minutes.

Craig resident to offer preview of new book

Cammi Montieth, owner of Nutrition Response Testing Center, will preview her new book, "Get Real," from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Downtown Books, 543 Yampa Ave.

In "Get Real," Montieth provides "easy-to-follow advice and soul-searching exercises to build confidence in simple, but powerful ways to feel accepted and love yourself," according to a press release from Downtown Books.

The book is geared toward women.

"Get Real" provides information about "how to truly identify the inner self."

Flu shots available for free to VA patients

Free flu shots for veterans who are registered patients with the Grand Junction VA Medical Center are available on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Patients who use the Veterans Affairs medical clinics in Craig and Montrose should call those clinics for details.

Community college to host free presentation

Colorado Northwestern Community College will host a free community presentation next week.

Northwest Colorado resident Josephina Kooijman will present "Amsterdam: Resolute, Heroic & Merciful," a presentation on art, culture, architecture and World War II in the Netherlands. The presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday in Room 201 at the CNCC Belltower.

VA changes key enrollment forms

Veterans service officers, social workers and others who assist veterans with enrollments into the Veterans Affairs Health Care System are asked to ensure they have the latest version of VA Form 10-10EZ, Application for Health Benefits. The new form is dated March 2008. Older forms do not ask for all newly required information.
