The list just got shorter.
Members of the superintendent search committee, comprised of all seven Moffat County School Board members, met Tuesday to narrow the list of firms that could help them find a new superintendent.
Pete Bergmann, the current superintendent, is scheduled to retire at the end of the 2008-09 school year.
At last month's school board meeting, Bergmann presented a list of four organizations to help them accomplish that task: Ray And Associates, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, of Omaha, Neb.; Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd., from Glenview, Ill.; and the Colorado Association of School Boards.
Ultimately, three of those groups made the cut. Five members present at the meeting, who were accompanied by other district administrators, opted to invite Ray And Associates, Hazard, Young Attea & Associates and CASB to make 30-minute presentations to search committee members.
Members eliminated McPherson & Jacobson, LLC from the list because the company didn't provide a base consulting fee.
The presentations will start at 3 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Moffat County School District administrative building, 775 Yampa Ave. The meeting will be open to the public.
Board members plan to choose one of those companies during its regular meeting that evening.
Looking for experience
Jo Ann Baxter, a retired 28-year Moffat County teacher and school board member since 2003, still was reviewing prospective companies' credentials early Tuesday afternoon.
Baxter, who was one of seven committee members assigned to examine the groups, didn't have a firm picked out yet. But she knew what she was looking for.
"We have a lot of unique situations" in Colorado education, she said, adding that the Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR) and its effect on school finance is among them.
At a conference last winter, Baxter learned about the administrative search services offered by CASB.
"(CASB officials) know Colorado, and they know Colorado schools," she said.
She's looking for a private company that would have the same knowledge, as well as a record of success landing administrators for other districts of similar size and location.
Still, Baxter wasn't looking only at CASB.
"I'm trying to keep a real open mind," she said.
