Sports weekly wrap-up for Nov. 25

Each Tuesday, the Craig Daily Press will review the past week in Moffat County sports, with complete team and individual statistics, along with a team schedule and results.

Teams are listed in alphabetical order.

Cheerleading

The MCHS cheerleading team cleaned up Saturday at the state regional tournament in Grand Junction.

The Bulldogs placed first in the event, earning a bid to the national tournament beginning Dec. 26 in Dallas, Texas.

Not a bad finish, considering the team changed its routine two days before the competition.

"We stuck our stunts and were steady throughout the whole routine," coach Naomi Villard said. "I was really pleased with how the girls performed, considering we only had two days to practice it."

Villard said the team has yet to reach a decision about competing in the state finals, Dec. 6 in Denver, or the nationals.

"We are going to talk about the cost (of nationals) and compare it to staying home here for state," Villard said. "We'll make a decision soon."

Cross country

Alicia Nelson picked up more than a gold medal this season - her last - as a high school cross-country runner.

Nelson was named to the Denver Post's All-Colorado team.

The selection includes runners from all classifications, and Nelson was one of eight harriers named to the team.

"Individually, she had a great year," coach Todd Trapp said of Nelson. "What she did this year is quite an accomplishment. It shows that she is one of the top girls in the state."

The senior was also named the Denver Post's 4A girls runner of the year and was chosen as a 4A first team selection, along with sophomore Maddy Jourgensen.

Nelson and Jourgensen also were named to the Western Slope League's first team, along with sophomore Chris Zirkle.

The WSL selection was Nelson's fourth, Jourgensen's second and Zirkle's first.

"It's Maddy's second time, and I think after the year she had last year, performing well, I think she expected to be right up there," Trapp said. "Chris, in his first time running cross country and to finish in the top-five, I think is impressive."

Hockey

The Moffat County Bulldog Club Hockey lost its first non-league game of the season Friday, 4-3, to visiting Rock Springs, Wyo.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-1 and mounted a third-period comeback that eventually fell short.

Colt Criswell scored a goal and had two assists; increasing his point total to 14, six games into the season.

The Bulldogs (3-2 RMYHL, 3-3 overall) resume league play Dec. 10, when Steamboat Springs (0-0) visits Moffat County Ice Arena.
