Colorado Division of Wildlife extends youth hunts

— The Colorado Division of Wildlife announced Monday it has some openings remaining for a cow elk youth hunt Dec. 6 and 7 on private land in the Meeker area.

To apply for the hunt, interested youths must be between the ages of 12 and 18, have a valid hunter safety card and not have previously participated in a DOW youth big game hunt, according to a news release. Also, a parent or guardian must be willing to accompany the youth on the hunt. Participants must provide their own firearm, equipment, lodging, meals and transportation.

A private landowner will provide guides and access to the land with the DOW.

To apply, youth hunters should send an e-mail to Kathleen Tadvick, DOW Education Coordinator at kathleen.tadvick@state.co.us. Submissions should include the youth's name, address, date of birth, hunter safety card number, parent's name, daytime and evening phone numbers and how many big game animals the youth has harvested in the past. Applicants should include a few sentences about why they enjoy hunting and want to participate in this opportunity.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 28. Young people selected to participate in the hunt will be notified Dec. 1.
